Join us on Friday, March 2 at 6pm to hear Maya Jewell Zeller read from her most current book of poetry, “Alchemy for Cells & Other Beasts”, illustrated by Carrie DeBacker. A collection of Ms. Zeller’s poems and illustrations by Carrie DeBacker will be on display at the Spokane Art School Gallery through Friday, April 27.
Maya Jewell Zeller is a writer, editor, and teacher living in the Pacific Northwest. She is the author of the poetry collections Rust Fish (April 2011, Lost Horse Press) and Yesterday, the Bees (October 2015, Floating Bridge Press); her prose and poetry appear widely, in such journals as Bellingham Review, West Branch, Pleiades, High Desert Journal, The Rumpus, Willow Springs, and The Moth, as well as textbooks and anthologies like Forest Under Story, All We Can Hold: Poems of Motherhood, and Environmental and Nature Writing: A Writer’s Guide and Anthology.
Among Maya’s accolades are a 2016 Promise Award from the Sustainable Arts Foundation and a residency in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. In addition to editing for Crab Creek Review and Scablands Books, Maya is a mother to two children and Assistant Professor of creative writing and poetics for Central Washington University. Carrie DeBacker is a Seattle-based visual artist and illustrator. Originally from the Chicago area, she holds a BA in Studio Art from Carleton College and MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Exploring the connection between physical and psychological processes, her work uses imagined gestures to create a personal language of self-representation.
