Short Story: Works by Mary Farrell Opening at the Spokane Art School

August 7 through September 26, 2020

Gallery Hours:

Fridays and Saturdays

Mary Farrell earned her BFA in printmaking from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in
1989 and her MFA in printmaking from the University of Cincinnati in 1995.
Farrell taught drawing and printmaking at Gonzaga University from 1995 until her
retirement in 2020. She received an Artist Trust Fellowship in Washington state
(2000), and Artist Trust Gap grant in Washington (2000, 1997). Her work is in
many private and public collections including the Portland Art Museum, The City
of Seattle Art Collection, The Jundt Art Museum in Spokane WA., and the China
National Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou, China.
Farrell says that her work is primarily about “locating larger meaning within
fragments of the world around me, inspired by the human body and plant forms.
I think in terms of geography, topography, and terrain as the place where the
drawn mark traces the tensions and connection between man and nature. I think
in terms of landscape and contained gesture within the bounded space of the
picture plane. And mostly, it’s about drawing.”

Upcoming Exhibit

Mother Daughter – Hannah Pomante – Artist in Residence

October 2 – 30, 2020
Gallery Hours:
Thursday & Friday
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
In Mother Daughter, Hannah Pomante examines the tradition of quilt making and its relationship to our transitioning environments. Under the guidance of her mother, Hannah began to learn to quilt, using the process to act as a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. The process became a way for the two to cope with their shifting lives amidst a pandemic, slowly allowing them to reconcile with these changes and become closer in the process. When making their first quilt together, the two used the collaboration as a transactional process. A mother passing her on skillset, preparing her daughter for the new environment she faces. In this body of work, you’ll find a variety of compositions, in which Hannah uses her skills in printmaking to provide nature-based textiles for her and her mother, allowing the two to create interwoven harmony—together.
