An Extended Now – Laura Truitt

August 2 – September 27, 2019

Closing reception Friday, September 27, 2019

5 – 8 P.M.

Laura Truitt is an assistant professor of painting and drawing at Gonzaga University. Before getting her MFA in painting at Colorado State Laura studied painting and drawing at Goucher College, the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, Vermont Studio Center and the Chicago Art Institute. Her current work focuses on architecture and landscape as representative of social systems and the contrasts that are inherent in painting and drawing space. Laura is represented by the William Havu Gallery in Denver and has shown her work all over the country including the EWU downtown student gallery, the Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, The Painting Center in NYC, the Arvada Center in Aurora, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver.

I’ve been working within landscape imagery for 15 years. Much of my work has to do with perspective. Linear perspective, surely, but also our emotional and collective perspective of landscape and personal space. The underlying conflict in my work is generated by climate change, land abuse and over consumption of all kinds, my own included.

Current II – Mariah Boyle

August 2 – September 27, 2019

Closing reception Friday, September 27, 2019

5 – 8 P.M.

Mariah Boyle creates life-sized mixed media drawings and installations that reference the landscape and personal or public memories associated with passing through or spending time in a place. Life in the Northwest has had a strong influence on her work. Her sketchbooks reference these sometimes exciting and sometimes mundane adventures and activities.

Mariah received her BA from Eastern Oregon University and her MFA from Washington State University in 2012. She taught studio art at both of her alma maters before joining the faculty at Spokane Falls Community College. Mariah is a member of the regional artist collective, Saranac Art Projects, in Spokane, Washington.

Upcoming Exhibit

Oh Heavens! – T Kurtz (Artist in Residence )

October 4 – 25, 2019

Artist reception, Friday, October 4, 2019

5 – 8 P.M.

After living in North Idaho for 25 years, T discovered a source of material that astounds her. There are rivers, forests, amazing vistas and lifestyles that beg to be captured in art. T recently relocated to Spokane WA She has been painting for 7 years and is excited about what that will mean for her growth in the coming years. She can be critical of her work but will always let herself get lost in the moment of creation. “T” enjoys painting her clients “furbabies” as well and is very happy to take commissions of most subject matter as long as the images belong to her or her clients.

T started working with pastel when she inherited her grandparent’s art supplies.  “They loved to create, and both enjoyed retirement by painting and drawing.” She told me.  “I had always wanted to try pastel but was frustrated by student sets and couldn’t justify the cost of professional art supplies.  Here they were, just begging to be used.”  A problem with accessible pastel surfaces pushed her towards suede mat board which she could find at several local frame shops.  Placing the buttery pastels to the soft surface sang beneath her fingers and she was hooked.

T is now a full-time artist currently working through a 6-month residency at the Spokane Art School in the Garland district.  Between that and doing several art shows during the year, she has a fulfilling career.  A prolific artist, she is excited and ready to try new shows and join new galleries.
