Mosaics is the art of placing broken glass or tile into patterns and compositions. Mosaics has developed into quite an art form today, used in everything from small artwork to large scale public pieces. Mosaics can be placed onto an existing structure, or a structure can be created specifically for your mosaic piece. Mosaics can be utilized on functional and sculptural work, and in this class, we will cover what materials to use, and how to go about designing and creating your own mosaic piece. Students will also have the option to pick their own concrete stepping stone for their mosaic. Students are encouraged to pack a lunch, or to go get one during class.

Mosaics and Concrete Supplies

Mosaics require a lot of supplies, a surface to mosaic on, adhesive, glass/tile, and grout. I will have various objects to mosaic on, glass, tile, concrete, concrete molds available for purchase separately, that ranges $5- $25 on the day of class. A stepping stone is around $18-20 for all of the supplies, if you use all from me. If you wish to purchase your own materials prior to class, I have provided a list below. Concrete

You will need quick set concrete, I will have this to purchase, so no need to bring your own, but you are certainly welcome to bring your own. Make sure however that you are using quickrete or something similar

Concrete Mold

For the purposes of learning how to work with concrete we will be creating steppingstones, or pavers, etc. You can use mine. You will want a mold that is the shape and size you want your piece to be. These are available at Home Depot and Lowes, or other hardware stores. You can also use an old cake pan or something similar.

Glass/Tile

Pieces of colored or stained glass, tile, old pottery or china, marbles, etc. that can be broken into small pieces

Tools

Please bring a hammer, contact paper, Ziploc bags, old rags, Vaseline, and glass nippers if you have them. Anything you don’t have can be borrowed or purchased from me

In the event you decide not to do concrete you will also need the following (I will have these available for purchase as well:

Grout

Sanded grout of any color, black or white work best. You will need enough to cover the surface you are putting your mosaic on

Adhesive

For outdoors, you will need a weather proof adhesive. For indoors you can use tacky glue, liquid nails silicone adhesive, thin set, etc.

Surface to Mosaic on

Keep in mind you can mosaic on most things, with a reasonably flat or even surface, for something outdoors you will want something that is weather proof, for something indoors or not exposed to as many elements, does not need to be weather proof. If your object is small you may want to bring more than one. Some of the following items are popular:

*Pre-registration is required for Art School classes; classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students will be registered ONLY on receipt of payment. Enrollment requirements: 3 students minimum. Classes with low enrollment are cancelled 48 hours before the class is scheduled to begin.

Refunds and Cancellation Policies: If a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be issued. Otherwise, no refunds will be issued.
