12 – 4

This four-hour workshop is a discussion and exploration of ways to reduce the toxic footprint that art supplies produce. Many of these ideas will also reduce art supply cost and waste.

  • Learn to make you own paints (tempera, watercolor, acrylics and oils) using pigments and mediums (acrylic medium, linseed oil, egg yolks etc.)
  • Learn to mix any color you want from only five colors (red, yellow, blue, white and black) so you don’t need to buy dozens of colors.
  • Use reusable containers instead of buying many small tubes and bottles of paint which are used up quickly and then thrown into the trash.
  • Acrylic and oils (and solvents) are toxic and should not be put down the sink. Learn how to organize your work space and techniques to keep yourself and the environment healthy.
  • Learn techniques to not waste paint. Using slop boards, slop containers and unloading brushes and rollers onto paper for use later in collage and mixed media projects.
  • Organize your studio space, art materials, collage papers etc., so you always know where and what you have, to reduce multiple purchases of items.

I will provide the materials and paint DYI recipes, but bring and apron or oversized shirt to protect your clothing.
