Pleurotus Vestitus - Lisa Soranaka

Pleurotus Vestitus – Lisa Soranaka

Lisa Soranaka is a ceramic artist living in the Inland Northwest. She received her BFA in ceramics from Central Washington University in 2009, and her MFA in ceramics at Washington State University in 2013. From the Seattle area originally, Lisa has shown her work in galleries across the country. Lisa teaches for Gonzaga University and the Community Colleges of Spokane. Additionally, Lisa has worked on public projects such as the Temporary Window Murals for Nordstrom in Downtown Spokane, and the Railway Underpass Mural, in conjunction with Spokane Arts. For more updates and information, you can visit her website, www.lisasoranaka.com

The series Pleurotus, is specifically an investigation of my love and fascination with decoration in our culture, and the line between beauty, excess, and consumption. Within this work I also contemplate ideas about what beauty is, how it is defined, and why it is important. I have since expanded upon that idea in Pleurotus Vestitus, I combine ceramic forms with apparel and dress forms, to specifically relate to the body and what happens when we apply these ideas of beauty to them. I am specifically interested in where the quest for beauty becomes harmful, and the decorative shell consumes oneself. When one becomes just a decoration, is it still truly beautiful?
