Ars Gratia Artis - Tom Quinn

Ars Gratia Artis – Tom Quinn

February 4 – 26, 2021

Hours: Thursdays and Friday 10 am – 2 pm

This year, I’m finishing a large painting of a lion that I have been working on for the last five years. In between sessions on the big one, I work on smaller pictures. The most recent series have that same leonine theme. There may be many more to come.

Originally from Great Falls, Montana, Tom Quinn grew up surrounded by art — mostly nostalgic celebrations of the Old West by the likes of Charles M. Russell and Fredrick Remington. He found there was more to art by the time he attended Gonzaga University and spent his junior year in Florence, the home of Michelangelo and Botticelli. There he became enamored of the serene beauty of Renaissance painting. After receiving a degree in art history, he went to the Art Institute of Seattle to pursue a career as an illustrator. At the time– the mid-eighties — there was a whole school of illustrators whose work was semi-primitive and had an ironic twist. The style died out by the nineties but Quinn considers it well worth reviving. Now living in Spokane, Quinn has done several murals in addition to his easel painting, his illustrated four books and several magazine articles, draws caricatures at parties and conventions, and teaches drawing and painting at the Spokane Art School, Corbin Art Center and the Institute for Extended Learning. His work has been exhibited in galleries in Spokane, Seattle, and Portland. He works mostly in acrylic and oil with hard edges, intense colors, and finicky detail. He likes to show what’s absurd but not impossible, to take the ordinary out of context, and to turn the familiar into the strange. Owen McAuley – Outside In

March 4 – 26, 2021

My work is composed of places and things that, at a particular moment, strike me as evocative of particular emotions or ideas in my own psyche and perhaps that of others. I seek to identify and commemorate the elements that spur such feeling, and in doing so, to examine my own experience and that of humanity in general. I see analogous relationships between visual characteristics of certain places and the situations that compose human existence. I attempt to convey a sense of the vague longing for something just beyond the grasp of our consciousness that I believe influences all endeavors of humanity in ways unexamined or unacknowledged. I also enjoy using the occasional oblique reference to ideas from art history and world events, as well as to personal history, literature, movies, and music; these are usually oblique because they take shape in the process through means that are as dimly understood to myself as they may be to the viewer.
