Perspective is to drawing what grammar is to writing and scales are to music. It provides a structure to art by dictating where objects must be placed and which directions the angles go to achieve that vital third dimension of depth. From one-point, two-point and three-point perspective, we move on to circles, shadows, and reflections. Best of all you don’t have to be an artist to draw well in perspective — when you know how to use the tools, they do the drawing for you.
PERSPECTIVE DRAWING SUPPLY LIST
- Drawing Board If you don’t have a drafting table at home, you should have a drawing board to tilt against a flat table and rest in your lap. Any plywood or masonite board of at least 15 by 15 inches will do. Spokane Art Supply has a 16 x 21” wooden board, and a 19” x 20” masonite clipboard.
- T-Square At least 15 inches. Spokane Art Supply has an 18-inch transparent edge T-square. You can also get them at Staples or Office Depot. The best T-Squares are those with a flat edge, not beveled, on the “T.”
- Ruler Any ruler will do, but an especially good model is the flat C-thru ruler with a grid.
- Triangles One 45/90 degree and one 30/60, each with at least a 5-inch hypotenuse.
- Protractor
- Compass Staples and Office Depot have good compass kits in the $10 range. Plastic compasses slip too easily to be practical. The cheap metal kind with a pencil clip are acceptable but may not have a wide enough radius.
- Graphite Pencil
- Red Pencil
- Blue Pencil
- Kneaded Eraser
- Paper Should be at least 11” x 14.” Strathmore drawing paper comes in a pad of 50 sheets, 11” x 14” Larger sizes, up to 16” x 20,” are even better.
- Portable Pencil Sharpener
- Masking Tape
