Utilizing texture and rich color, Kathy’s paintings lean heavily toward impressionism with a strong abstract quality.

Her current work is rooted in the landscape and inspired by the photos she takes while traveling throughout Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana. She uses a simple point and shoot camera during her drives, downloads those photos, and carefully chooses images with strong design elements for future paintings. Emotional connections play their role, and it’s the “push pull” of these entities that create her best work.

Kathy began her career painting on-site, but has since moved indoors. The ability to work on several pieces, at a thoughtful pace, has been important while she continues to grow her skills. Currently, Kathy paints in oils and acrylic on either baltic birch boards or stretched canvas. She gessoes and textures these surfaces before laying in her initial background color. Then she’ll do a quick sketch, laying in the basic shapes; thin, dark colors first, while gradually working up to the lights. Kathy will continue to develop a painting in stages, with dry time in between those layers, until she feels that there’s nothing more to say.

Kathy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gonzaga University. She lived in the Seattle area for many years, painting for individual and corporate clients alike, until returning to Coeur d’Alene over 30 years ago.

She has participated in various events in Seattle, Edmonds, Boise, and the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene areas. In 2013, with the help of local artist Teresa McHugh, Kathy started the CDA Artists’ Studio Tour, which continues to grow yearly, with the help of The CDA Arts and Cultural Alliance.

Kathy wishes to acknowledge that, for her, the practice of making art is not a solitary endeavor. Though actual paint time is secluded, her life is truly sustained by the love of family and friends, which no painting on earth can replicate.

The Spokane Art School carries a variety of fine art from local artists. See something you like? Call us for curbside pickup. 509-325-1500, Fridays and Saturdays 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
