SPOKANE ART SCHOOL
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

THE VISION

In the interest of serving our mission, “Teaching Spokane to make and enjoy art,” it is the intention of the Spokane Art School (hereafter SAS) to invite professional artists into our midst to work, teach and share their creative process and its end results with the Spokane community.

THE PROGRAM
The SAS Artist-In-Residence Program will provide up to six months of free studio space in our facility at 811 W. Garland in Spokane, paid teaching opportunities during that time (provided enough students show interest in the class to make it economically feasible), and a gallery exhibit at the close of the residency, all in the interest of encouraging regional artists to explore their talents in new and creative ways.

The successful applicant will have received a college degree (AFA, BFA, MFA) in some aspect of fine arts creation, maintain a portfolio of previous work (to be made available upon request), and demonstrate interest in developing new work for public display as part of this residency.

Because the studio is on the second floor of what was once a residence, the space is not currently accessible to individuals with disabilities, and the successful applicant must be able to climb stairs.

The art school will pay for utilities access for the studio space (electricity and heat) and liability insurance, and can provide rudimentary furnishings (desk, chair, etc.), but any specialized equipment or art supplies will be provided by the visiting artist. Running water is not available in the studio, but can be brought from the industrial restroom sink on the floor below.

HOW TO APPLY

Submit a letter of interest (not to exceed 350 words), a link to personal artist website or images of three recent works, and a short proposal for at least one class that you would be willing to offer to students during your tenure as artist-in-residence (class descriptions can be found at www.spokaneartschool.net for reference). Beginning and ending dates for the residency, as well as the timing of the gallery exhibit (at which your work would be made available for purchase, with the artist retaining 60% of each purchase price), will be negotiated between the SAS and the successful applicant.

  • To insure all images stay with the application the digital files must be named in the following format:
