Developing drawing skills requires learning to really “see” the world around us. In this class we will focus on using various tools to aid our seeing and improve our visual accuracy in drawing. In each session, we will use a different tool to practice drawing what we see to complete a composed drawing project. As we work I will share some of the tips and tricks I use when I draw. This class will provide fun and challenge for every skill level!
In session 1 our goal will be to practice drawing by seeing what is actually in front of us and not what we think we are seeing. We will each make our own “velo” a gridded tool developed in the Renaissance that will help us see and draw accurate proportions and foreshortening from a still life.
In session 2 our goal will be to develop an interesting composition from what we see. We will each construct and use an armature grid (like one used by Van Gogh) to help us see and compose drawings “plein air” or outdoors (weather permitting, dress warm!).
In session 3 our goal will be to create a personal drawing that communicates the variety of what we see as we go about our lives. We will use grids to practice accurately scaling and copying reference material.
Materials provided, but bring your favorite graphite pencils and eraser, if you have them.
