Inspired by the majesty of the Western United States, Michelle focuses on thoughtful design, quality of form, and subtle, earthy finishes to create pottery that captures the inspiration, serenity, and sincerity of nature. She seeks out wild materials, such as clay and wood ash, to add another layer of connection and interest. The pottery is thrown on an electric wheel or hand formed, using stoneware clay. Functional pots are glazed, using hand mixed glazes in an earthy, calm palette. They are fired to Cone 6 in a gas or electric kiln. Alternative fired pots are fired in a metal barrel, using layers of straw, pine needles, seaweed, sawdust, copper, and salts to achieve a beautiful organic surface.
Michelle started in clay at Bonners Ferry High School in 1989. In 2010 she began lessons with Adam Scoggin, of Blue Heron Pottery. Adam spent 3 summers at Pond Farm in California, learning from Marguerite Wildenhain. Marguerite taught her students the strict discipline she learned at the Bauhaus in Germany. Adam passed these lessons on to Michelle. She threw pots for an entire year and didn’t keep any. He then taught her about glazing and firing. Adam became a close friend and mentor. Michelle participated in a weeklong workshop at the Archie Bray in 2018 called “The Crafted Pot” that further stretched her to consider the design and intention of her pots. Michelle is thankful for every day she spends in her studio and loves the lifelong learning the artistic life provides.
